Dr. habil. phys. Juris Purāns, leading researcher and Head of the Thin Films Laboratory at the Institute of Solid State Physics, University of Latvia (ISSP UL), has been awarded the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS) Grand Medal for achievements in science.
Juris Purāns is one of Latvia’s most prominent scientists, with an invaluable contribution to the development of synchrotron radiation research in the country. He has long championed the advancement of this field by establishing the EXAFS Laboratory and the Thin Films Laboratory, both of which have fostered collaborations with Latvian industry and attracted numerous international projects. Under his leadership, ISSP UL has developed a globally recognized research centre focused on the applications of synchrotron radiation.
In addition to his scientific work, Dr. Purāns has played an active role in educating the next generation of scientists – he has lectured at the University of Latvia and held visiting professorships in France, Italy, and Switzerland.
Prof. Dr. chem. Donāts Erts, Vice President of the Latvian Academy of Sciences (LAS) and leading researcher at the Institute of Chemical Physics, University of Latvia, is awarded the LAS Grand Medal for his outstanding contributions to nanotechnology and materials science.
Prof. Donāts Erts is one of the pioneers of nanotechnology in Latvia. His main research areas are related to the synthesis, properties, and potential applications of nanostructured materials (such as nanowires, nanotubes, DNA molecules, graphene, thin films, and topological insulators) in batteries, sensors, thermoelectric devices, nanoelectromechanical and nanoelectronic systems, as well as the development of equipment for studying nanoscale interactions. Prof. Erts’ scientific research and innovations have significantly contributed to the advancement of nanotechnology in Latvia, enabling the formation of international collaboration networks and gaining recognition in the scientific community.
With over 180 scientific publications, multiple patents, and leadership roles in national and EU research programs, Prof. Donāts Erts plays a vital role in the international academic ecosystem and mentorship. He has supervised numerous PhD and MSc students and held research positions at top European universities, including in Sweden, Ireland, the UK, and Estonia. He has received acknowledgements and recognition from the from the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia, the Latvian Academy of Sciences, Ministry of Education and Science, and others, for outstanding scientific achievements and contributions to research.
The LAS Grand Medal is the highest annual award given by the Academy to Latvian and/or foreign scientists for outstanding creative achievements. Nominees are recommended by full, honorary, and foreign members of the Academy, as well as its departments, while the final decision is made by the LAS Senate. To date, 64 distinguished individuals have received this honour.
